Teaching is about lifelong learning – my own and my future students. I have a great passion and love for teaching, so much so that I feel I need to teach in order to be myself. Teaching has its own rewards and challenges that make this profession so interesting and invaluable. I love that every day is different and that every day is a chance for everyone to learn something new.
I believe that every child is special and intelligent in their own unique way. I hope to create a safe, supportive and inclusive classroom environment where my students feel comfortable to develop academically and aim to reach their full potential. As a way of understanding students further I refer to Howard Gardner’s theory which outlines eight multiple intelligences: linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinaesthetic, inter-personal, intra-personal and naturalist. This theory aides in my acknowledgement that every individual has different strengths and learn in diverse ways. I realise that building strong relationships with my students can help me understand their learning capabilities and personalise my teaching to complement their cognitive strengths.
Together with building student relationships, I believe that parents/carers/guardians, school community and staff members are important partnerships to foster because they all contribute to the overall welling of each student. I aim to make this a priority as a teacher through constant communication and engagement to assist with students receiving a quality education.
Once I build these partnerships outside of the classroom, my hope is to continue this communication within the classroom through implementing a constructivist approach. Vygotsky and Bruner are theorist that have influenced my learning approach because I agree with their theory that active learning occurs through social collaboration with peers and scaffolding from teachers. I aim to support my students in their learning and reassure them that it is okay to make mistakes and take risks, as long as you never give up on yourself. This allows students to use collaboration as an opportunity to strengthen and enhance their knowledge and skills so they ultimately leave my classroom with the ability to be informed and active citizens. Personally, I view all students as ‘knowers’ even before they set foot in my classroom, so by sharing this knowledge and experience with others, including myself, everyone can greatly benefit through learning.
Lastly, my beliefs and values are something that I would aim to pass on to my students. Equality, respect, honesty, compassion, humility, resilience and integrity are just some of the values that I hold with high esteem. As a teacher, I aim to be a positive role model to my students and encompass all these values in everything I say and do. I wish to make a positive impact in my students’ lives and influence them to be the best version of themselves.
